Meningitis outbreak information

We are aware of the meningitis outbreak in Kent and understand that this may cause worry amongst patients.

We are proactively contacting all patients whose records show that they have not had a meningitis (MENACWY) vaccination to either request proof they have had it or, if they haven't ever had it, to offer them an appointment for the vaccine at either of our surgeries.

The Meningitis B vaccination became available to children in 2015 and is now part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule. We are unable to routinely offer this vaccine to anyone who was not a aged 8 weeks to 2 years old when this vaccine first became available.

When would be be able to offer the Meningits B vaccination to patients who have not had it as part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule?

If we were informed by public health England that you have had potential contact with a confirmed case. They would contact you or us directly to arrange the vaccination.

From the 19th of March 2026 the UKSHA updated their guidance to offer some students at the University of Kent a Meningitis B vaccine. If you are a University of Kent student that has been advised to have the Meningitis B vaccine but have returned home to York before receiving the vaccine, please call the surgery on 01904 754900 to arrange a vaccination appointment. Please note, we will require some form of evidence to say that you are eligible to have the vaccine before booking your appointment.
